GoldCoast Chapter Hosts Girls Scouts Event

At the February Goldcoast Chapter meeting the girl scouts in the foreground gave three presentations--a rap song about Poncho Barnes, a powerpoint on Amelia Earhart and short biographies of the first ten women in the world to become pilots. Chapter members who are helping the girls earn their aviation badges and the scout leaders are standing.

The scouts were surprised that Diana carries handcuffs. Other aviation careers discussed were air traffic controller, aircraft mechanic and educator.

Suncoast Chapter Hosts Poker Run to Raise Money for Space Camp Scholarship

Our 2nd Annual Poker Run was held in February to raise funds for the Space Camp Scholarships that are offered by the Florida Suncoast 99s chapter on the west coast of Florida.  Teaming up with EAA 282 chapter at KCLW Clearwater Airpark to benefit their scholarship fund, the 99s prepared food for the lunch served to participants after the "run".  Hands were turned in and ordered from high to low.  After perusing their standings, the audience participated in a lively bidding war for the wild cards to improve their chances at the first place prize of $99 (in honor of the 99s) and 2nd place prize of $49.50 (in honor of our significant others, our 49 1/2s).  Many additional prizes were available from a headset, books, aviation glasses, bottles of spirits, and gift cards to restaurants far and wide in our area.  Few in the audience left empty-handed.  The weather was windy and hindered some who had planned to fly in from the south as well as the east coast of our state but their donation to our fundraising was appreciated.  Advertising through the many school boards, districts and individual schools throughout our chapter's area has been put out through email and we hope to receive many applications from interested girls who want to attend Space Camp or Space Academy in Huntsville, Alabama this July.  Notification of our Space Camp scholarship information can be accessed through our website at http://www.fpcg.net/sc99 then click on Space Camp Scholarships on the compass rose.  Pictures of past Space Camp winners and other educational activities sponsored by the Florida Suncoast 99s chapter can be viewed on our Facebook page by searching "Florida Suncoast 99s" once you sign in to Facebook.  The scholarships are open to any Florida girl in grades 4, 5, or 6.  The postmarked deadline is stringent.  Neatness and creativity are a must!  Good luck to any girl who deigns to apply!
