Compass Rose Painting at Treasure Coast International Airport By Ruth Jacobs Treasure Coast International Airport representatives contacted the Ninety-Nines to see about getting a compass rose
painted at their airport. After meeting with them we readily agreed to paint a signature 99s compass rose there. The airport
agreed to provide all the paint, brushes, rollers, handles lunch and drinks for the whole crew. On Friday,
February 8, 2019, a crew of 7 Treasure Coast Ninety-Nines, Anita Mixon, Maren Graben, Jennifer Clarke, Evelyn Galus, Jody
Smith, Judy Snow, Ruth Jacobs, 2 49 1/2s, Sven Graben, Ray Mason and little female pilot in training, Zoe Graben, laid out
the 50 foot diagram for the compass rose to be painted on Saturday. Anthony Scott, Assistant Airport Manager brought
the airport dog over to watch our progress. Saturday morning, February 9, 2019, we were all welcomed to the Ft Pierce EAA
Chapter for a hearty breakfast before we began painting the rose. We thank Mike and crew for an awesome breakfast fare to
start our day. After setting up our tent to keep the sun off the paint and supplies, we began the task of
painting with Treasure Coast 99 Wendy Wheeler putting the first stroke of white paint of the pavement. We had such
an awesome group painting all day. The following people painted the Compass Rose: Treasure Coast 99s
Anita Mixon, Evelyn Galus, Judy Snow, Michelle Rudolph, Jody Smith, Wendy Wheeler, Lisa Drew, Michelle Rudolph, Kayla Rhodes,
Debby Artman, Jennifer Clarke, Jessica Meier, Ruth Jacobs, future 99 Madison Fauntleroy, along with 49 ½ Ray Mason
and Nick Meier, 99 Nicole Gagnon, FL Heartland 99 Bev Mautner, Paradise Coast 99 Judy Schiff with 5 CAP students, Alex Rozendaal, EAA
#203 Rick Golightly, Glenn Vorres, Matthew Thompson, Jack Farino. Treasure Coast 99 Paris Dollinger brought her son, nephew
and niece to see all the work getting done. Paris and Lorelei gave us a break by serving lemonade to everyone. During
the day we received visitors from EAA, Airport management and area pilots taking pictures and taking a brush or two. Airport
employees Anthony Tarver and Mike Sousa along with Anthony Scott watched our progress and were there to help with supplies
and get things we needed. They also helped with the clean up so we left the grounds in good condition. We stopped for lunch about noon to enjoy all the good pizza the airport provided. Then back to work getting the final
touches on our masterpiece. Jody finished it off by mixing a gray color to match the pavement to cover all the boo-boos
and marks. Lisa Drew flew her C172 from Stuart with Madison. Judy flew her C206 from Naples area with
the 5 CAP students but had to leave before lunch to get back home. Nick Meier tried to film with the
drone but was unsuccessful. Jody set up the camera and filmed the entire event. Others took still photos so we have a great
record of all the painting going on.

on Saturday. Looking over the plans, in front from left, are Charlotte Gentry; Jim Kmet, airport manager; and in back, volunteers

-- It will take more than 35 gallons of highway paint to complete the latest task commissioned by a group of female flyers.
The Ninety-Nines, an international society of women pilots with ties to Amelia Earhart, will paint a navigational
compass rose at the Upper Cumberland Regional Airport on Saturday. It will take multiple cans of color to fill in the planned
80-foot diameter compass, and its starred points will share two coats of crisp blue and white. The outline for the rose was
surveyed last week by airport engineer Richard Rinks and marked with nails and sprits of orange spray paint.
Saturday,
however, comes the long-awaited main event.
"It's just stunning," Charlotte Gentry, a newer member of
the Ninety-Nines, said of the design plans. She first approached the Upper Cumberland Regional Airport board about the project
in December, and received whole-hearted approval.
For decades, similar projects have been undertaken at dozens
of airports across the country -- a compass rose marking, for example, has been painted in recent years at the airport in
Lewisburg, Tenn. Also called airmarking, the rose helps identify airports from above, and pilots can also calibrate their
compass according to the orientation of the markings on the ground. This particular rose will have a one-of-a-kind custom
center, which will shine in either silver or gold. Gentry said it will feature the Ninety-Nines logo, the airport designation
and a credit to the local Experimental Aviation Association Chapter 1378, for which members of the aviation enthusiast group
are also volunteering this weekend.
"My sister painted a compass rose with the Ninety-Nines in Sanderson Field
in Michigan and inspired me to try to do that at as many airports as I could," Gentry said. "So I thought, why not
start at home?
Gentry said volunteers will be needed for the day-long effort, which begins at 9 a.m. Those interested
in helping should contact Gentry and can give as little or as much of their time as possible. No aviation experience is necessary.
In addition, she said, about 12 women pilots will be flying or driving in from all over the Southeast region to
work. The airport's FBO, Region Air, will be providing food and drinks to volunteers. It also footed the bill for most of
the supplies.
"It's a tremendous thing for these women to do this," Eric Walker, manager of Region Air,
said in December. "(The history) is absolutely amazing, which is why we really want our airport to be a part of this
unbelievable thing in aviation."
The Upper Cumberland Regional Airport is located south of Cookeville in White
County. From Highway 111, take the Old Kentucky Road exit and go west. At the flashing light, continue straight; signs will
mark the way.
In case of rain, the compass rose painting will be rescheduled for May 14. So far, the weather forecast
looks clear. Read more: Herald Citizen - Compass rose in bloom
Spaceport paints the town October, 2010:
We laid out and painted a new compass rose at Orlando Executive
Airport. We were joined by several members of the ERAU chapter as well as a few members of the Women in Aviation Orlando chapter and a couple of members of EAA 74.
The Sheriff’s helicopter was kind enough to fly over and take some pictures of our finished product. February, 2011:
Back to the tarmac for another compass rose. This time we went to New
Smyrna Beach to repaint their 100” rose, which we originally painted 4 years ago. The paint and the weather did not co-operate, so it
took us 2 Saturdays to complete the task. It was windy both days and very cold the second day. The Goodyear blimp
was moored across the taxiway from where we were painting. We got to meet a member of the crew who allowed us to get
up close for pictures and drooling.
